Processing High-Quality Images with MaraDocs

We explain how to ensure images are in high quality when importing them into MaraDocs. WhatsApp and Outlook imports in particular are susceptible to low resolutions.

Processing High-Quality Images with MaraDocs

MaraDocs recognizes documents in images and prepares them as optimized PDFs. MaraDocs' state-of-the-art text recognition in particular is a real helper in everyday law firm life.

To leverage the full potential of MaraDocs when creating PDFs from emails and photo files, the quality of the imported files should not be too low.

Image Resolution

What Is Image Resolution?

Image files consist of so-called pixels. An image can have, for example, 580 pixels in width and 921 pixels in height. A pixel is the smallest displayable unit.

An image file representing a letter-sized document page with text should have a resolution of approximately 1200 x 1700 pixels.

Quality Cannot Be Improved Afterwards

At lower resolutions, text appears unclean and blurry. Especially when zooming in (enlarging), ugly edges appear and readability suffers.

While it is very easy to downscale from a high-resolution image to a lower resolution, the reverse is not easily possible: The necessary information is simply missing.

Recommended Resolutions by Use Case

The following table serves as a guide for the correct resolution of images.

Letter Size Dimensions: 8.5 × 11 inches 215.9 × 279.4 mm

The required pixel count depends on the output resolution (DPI – dots per inch). The higher the DPI, the better the print quality – but also the larger the file.

Use CaseTypical ResolutionCalculation (8.5 × 11 inches)Recommended Pixel Size (approx.)Remarks
Web / Screen Display72 DPI8.5 × 72 = 612 px
11 × 72 = 792 px
612 × 792 pxSufficient for online viewing, not print-ready
Office Printing / Draft Print150 DPI8.5 × 150 = 1275 px
11 × 150 = 1650 px

11 × 200 = 2200 px

What Matters When Importing

WhatsApp Compresses and Scales Images Heavily - Use "HD"

If you receive images of documents via WhatsApp, you should ask the sender to send the images in "HD" format. Otherwise, WhatsApp will downscale the images to a relatively small format. This saves data volume but produces poorly readable documents.

The New Outlook Only Imports Preview Images via Drag & Drop

Caution when importing images if you use Microsoft's "new Outlook". Microsoft has been trying for some time to move users from the classic Outlook application to the "new Outlook". Unlike the previous native application, this is merely a web app running in a modified Edge browser.

Outlook Import with Drag & Drop to MaraDocs

When used with MaraDocs, this has the disadvantage that drag & drop of entire emails no longer works. The email data including attachments is simply not attached by the new Outlook and therefore cannot be read by MaraDocs.

What does work, but repeatedly leads to disappointing results, is drag & drop of individual images from the email to MaraDocs.

But beware: Only the displayed preview images of the attachments contained in the email are added to MaraDocs. The original images are not imported this way.

Solution for the New Outlook

To get the original images with the correct resolution when using the new Outlook, you can drag the email from the new Outlook via drag & drop to a folder on your PC (e.g., desktop). The email file created by Outlook can then be added to MaraDocs with high quality.

MaraDocs Creates Optimized PDFs from Client Documents

If you receive images instead of PDFs from clients, you no longer need to convert them manually. MaraDocs handles the complete process – fast, reliable, and without quality loss.

  • Simply import entire emails
  • all images are automatically analyzed
  • as a result, you receive optimized PDFs

MaraDocs - as if the client had used a scanner app.
